Description
Fireflies is a free Windows Phone 7 game made by Kristin Siu and Eric Butler. It’s our first phone game!
The focus of the game is color blending. In each level, the player flicks his or her finger to send a net across the screen in an attempt to catch fireflies. Each firefly that drifts though the screen comes in 4 flavors: red, green, blue, and white. Caught fireflies go to a jar whose color is the average (in the additive sense) of the caught fireflies’ color. So if you catch a lot of red and green flies, the jar will be yellow. The goal of each level is to match a certain goal color while catching some required minimum number of fireflies. Goal colors can be any of white, red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, or magenta, so you need to be careful about which fireflies you catch.
Points are awarded for completing levels, doing so quickly, and catching fireflies in a chain with a single swipe of the finger. Periodically, the cute, orange mascot makes an appearance. If you catch him, he’s worth 10,000 points!
The game has a highscore table, but it’s currently local to the phone. Unfortunately, a global highscore table did not make it in time for release. However, if users really enjoy it, we’ll make an updated version where you can compete with other players for the highest score.
It’s currently not very colorblind-friendly, I’m afraid. If we make an updated version, we may look into ways of making the game more accessible. You also have to understand additive color blending. The in-game instruction menu has a handy diagram for those unfamiliar with it.
